RSR: SDSU AZTECS SHUTOUT NEW HAMPSHIRE WILDCATS, CLAW CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS AND NORTHERN ILLINOIS HUSKIES IN NON-CONFERENCE COLLEGE FOOTBALL

The San Diego State University (SDSU) Aztecs shutout the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Wildcats 31-0 in their season-opener before a Sky Show attendance of 46,486 at Qualcomm Stadium on September 3.

Senior Eric Judge came up with a game-high five catches for SDSU and Donnel Pumphrey had 21 carries for 98 yards and a touchdown and caught four passes for 41 yards for the Aztecs.

The senior is the son of Madison alum Gina Padua.

Pumphrey had help from sophomore Christian Chapman who completed 16-of-25 passes for a career-best 283 yards with four of them going to junior Micah Holder for a career-high 160 yards and two touchdowns.

The UNH offense ran 60 percent of their running plays up the middle on robust runs from senior Dalton Crossan, quick handoffs to junior Trevon Bryant, and quarterback sneaks from sophomore Trevor Knight, but kept running into SDSU barriers like senior Alex Barrett, senior Randy Ricks, sophomore Ronley Lakalaka, and senior Calvin Munson.

Pumphrey finished with a career-high 281 yards on 29 carries with three touchdowns to break Marshall Faulk’s career rushing record and the Aztecs speared the California Golden Bears 45-40 before a crowd of 42,473 at Qualcomm on September 10.

Pumphrey also caught four passes for 29 yards and Judge came up with four catches for 47 yards for SDSU.

Pumphrey ran for 220 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries as the Aztecs clawed the Northern Illinois Huskies 42-28  in DeKalb,Illinois on September 17.

Pumphrey had help from Chapman who completed 11-of-19 passes for 126 yards and a career-best three touchdowns of his own with four of them going to Holder for 67 yards and a touchdown.

USD

Sept.3: Sophomore Anthony Lawrence completed 17-of-26 passes for 211 yards and one touchdown as the University of San Diego (USD) Toreros shutout the Western New Mexico Mustangs 27-0 in their season-opener at Torero Stadium.

Lawrence had help from senior Jonah Hodges (16 carries, 106 yards, 2 TD’s, six catches, 53 yards), senior Jereke Armstrong (15 carries, 53 yards), senior Brian Riley (three catches, 92 yards), junior Ross Dwelley, (three catches, 46 yards, 1 TD), and junior Justin Priest (three catches, 13 yards).

Sept.10: Lawrence completed 15-of-24 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Toreros suffered a tough 28-16 loss to the Cal Poly Mustangs in San Luis Obispo.

Lawrence had help from Hodges (12 carries, 93 yards), Armstrong (seven carries, 31 yards), Dwelley (9 catches, 97 yards, 2 TD’s), and Riley (three catches, 24 yards).

Sept.24: Lawrence completed 26-of-34 passes for 371 yards and two touchdowns as USD grounded the Dayton Flyers 34-22 at Torero Stadium on September 24.

Lawrence had help from Hodges (23 carries, 70 yards, 1 TD, six catches, 122 yards, 1 TD), Armstrong (nine carries, 27 yards), Dwelley (eight catches, 88 yards, 1 TD), and Riley (six catches, 126 yards).

OREGON

Sept.3: Horizon alum Darren Carrington caught seven passes for 117 yards and a touchdown as the Oregon Ducks tamed the UC Davis Mustangs 53-28 in their season-opener in Eugene, Oregon.

Sept.10: Carrington caught four passes for 59 yards as the Ducks defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 44-26 at Oregon.

Sept.17: Carrington caught three passes for 36 yards, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Ducks suffered a tough 35-32 loss to the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Nebraska.

HS FOOTBALL RECAP 

Vista Murrieta 20, Madison 9: Senior Terrell Carter had 227 total yards and seniors Erick Buchanan and Brandon Lewis had 226 and 107 all-purpose yards, respectively, but it wasn’t quite enough as Madison suffered a tough loss to Vista Murrieta on August 26.

Madison 48, Steele Canyon 7: Carter passed for 269 yards and Lewis and Buchanan had 202 and 128 all-purpose yards, respectively, as Madison clawed Steele Canyon on September 2.

Madison 35, Bonita Vista 21: Carter had 196 total yards and Buchanan and senior Elijah Thomas had 277 and 98 all-purpose yards, respectively, as Madison defeated Bonita Vista Barons on September 9.

Madison 41, Eastlake 7: Carter had 215 total yards and Buchanan and Thomas had 149 and 82 all-purpose yards, respectively, as Madison enjoyed a titanic win over Eastlake on September 16.

El Cajon Valley 40, Kearny 26: Sophomore Kenyon Williams passed for 192 yards and senior Treshaun Gray, junior Brenton Bell, and senior DJ Linton had 164, 73, and 64 all-purpose yards, respectively, but it wasn’t quite enough as Kearny suffered a tough loss to El Cajon Valley on August 26.

Kearny 31, Cardenas Federal Prep 13: Williams had 244 total yards and Bell, Linton, and sophomore Davon Jones had 258, 117, and 154 all-purpose yards, respectively, as Kearny sent Cardenas Federal Prep crashing back down to earth on September 2.

Marshall 7, Kearny 6: Williams had 174 total yards and Bell, Linton, and Jones had 151, 70, and 67 all-purpose yards, respectively, but it wasn’t quite enough as Kearny  suffered a tough loss to Marshall on September 10.
