Free Trolley & Bus Day – Wednesday, October 2nd

On October 2nd the MTS is opening up their whole system again to show how MTS can change the way San Diego moves.

That’s right – on October 2nd all fixed route MTS buses and all three Trolley lines will be TOTALLY FREE to ride, for most riders. Last year, more than 53,000 trips were taken on the region’s first-ever Free Ride Day, and we’re looking to break that record this year!

This year, Free Ride Day is also California’s Clean Air Day, so when you choose transit October 2, you’re helping to keep the Golden State golden.

MTS will be out and about on Free Ride Day with tote bags, pop-sockets and stickers to thank riders for choosing transit.

FAQ’s

Do I need a Compass Card or other fare on Free Ride Day?

No fares will be collected on Free Ride Day – just get on board and enjoy the ride.

I am a regular rider and using Compass Cash. Should I still tap on the validator?

No – do not tap on the validator. If you tap the validator a fare will be deducted and we won’t be able to provide you a refund. Keep the Compass Card at home!

What if I can’t participate on Free Ride Day on Oct. 2, but still want to try transit soon. Can I get a free ride rain check?

No. Unfortunately Free Ride Day is one day only.

What should I do if I get lost and can’t find my stop?

MTS Ambassadors and/or Security Officers will be at most Trolley stations and can help answer any questions.

Do I need a Compass Card to ride the trolley on regular days?  How do I obtain one?  Is there a Senior discount?

Ask an MTS Ambassador at a trolley station how to obtain a Compass Card using a kiosk and how to use a validator kiosk before boarding the trolley after Free Ride Day. Also ask about loading the Compass Card at your local store. If you want a Senior Compass Card, ask how to obtain one (hint: not at a trolley kiosk).

Can I ride the North County Transit District’s services, such as the COASTER or SPRINTER?

Yes. NCTD is participating in Free Ride Day as well. Visit its website for more information about NCTD Free Ride Day at gonctd.com.
