Centennial Celebration at Cabrillo National Monument

Military History Event – Dec 7-8

The Centennial Celebration at Cabrillo National Monument is set to be held this weekend December 7 -8, 2013, with the commemorative 100th anniversary ceremony taking place Sunday December 8 at 3PM.

Centennial activities will coincide with the park’s Third Annual World War II – Fort Rosecrans Goes to War event, which highlights the park’s military history.  Portions of the park will appear much as they would have during that time period, complete with re-enactors, historic vehicles, military aircraft flyovers and bunker tours.

As part of the Centennial events, a time capsule and park historic timeline will be on display.  The lighthouse will be open for tours on Saturday.  Sunday’s highlights include an exhibitor fair with local museums and organizations on hand with fun activities.  It will be followed by the formal commemorative ceremony, which will be attended by park staff, volunteers, local and regional dignitaries and will feature a volunteer-in-parks color guard.

Additionally, the Cabrillo National Monument Foundation is hosting a 1940’s era swing-dance Saturday night at 6:00PM.  It will be attended by Pearl Harbor survivor, retired Capt. Jack Evans who won his first swing-dance competition the night before the bombing, on Dec. 6, 1941, while stationed aboard the USS Tennessee.  The dance is a ticketed event.  For information about ticket purchases go to http://www.cnmf.org
