As morning breaks upon the small and quaint neighborhoods of Clairemont, its residents begin the routines of their day. Coffee is poured, the mail carrier slides envelopes into their boxes, and computers are powered on to illuminate the dark. Over thousands of years, humanity has begun the day in its own but similar and routine manner. Playwright and novelist Thornton Wilder envisioned a town on one particular morning in the fictional town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, early 20th century. This spring, our worlds collide…
Starting end of April, local theatre company Clairemont Act One will perform Our Town, the classic drama that surrounds two ordinary families that learn the significance of life, death and love in a small corner of the world. Supported by a diverse cast, this performance will enchant those who already love the play as well as those who are experiencing it for the first time.
Wilder’s principal message in Our Town—that people should appreciate the details and interactions of everyday life while they live them—became critical at a time when political troubles were escalating in Europe. World War II was on the horizon when the play hit theaters in 1938. Our Town eventually won Wilder his second Pulitzer Prize, and went on to become one of the most performed American plays of the twentieth century.
The fictional town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, stands in for Everytown in this American classic, described by playwright Edward Albee as “probably the finest play ever written by an American.”
Performances will take place at Northminster Presbyterian Church Hall, 4324 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Show dates are Friday, April 28th at 7:00 PM; Saturday, April 29th at 1:00 PM and 7 PM; Friday, May 5th at 7:00 PM; Saturday, May 6th at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $15 adults and $12 students, vets, and seniors.
Founded in 2011, Clairemont Act One was formed by a group of theatre enthusiasts who wished to bring their passion and love of the stage to life. Now in its sixth season with the debut of Our Town, Clairemont Act One invites audiences to take a look into the day-to-day happenings of a town that, despite existing in the 20th century, reflect the same themes that present-day Americans identify with in their own life journeys. Victoria is a San Diego State graduate and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism. She is primarily involved with sales and marketing for Orangetheory Fitness in downtown San Diego. In her spare time, Victoria performs with local theatre company Clairemont Act One, spending time in and out of the studio with her Orangetheory family and being a pet parent to two small lovable dogs. She lives in the Bay Park area.
