Caltrans advises motorists in Imperial County that a 10-mile portion of eastbound Interstate 8 (I-8) east of State Route 111 will be shifted to the westbound side beginning Friday at 9 a.m. through June. The shift will result in one lane of I-8 in each direction from a half mile west of the Anderhold Road Overcrossing to a half mile east of the East Highline Canal Bridge.
The eastbound I-8 on- and off-ramps to Vanderlinden Road and the connector ramp to State Route 115 (SR-115) will also be closed.
Signs will be placed detouring eastbound I-8 motorists to exit at Bonds Corner Road south to Hunt Road east, to Vanderlinden Road. Travel north on Vanderlinden Road to access SR-115.
The eastbound I-8 on- and off-ramps to Orchard Road/State Route 7 (SR-7) are also closed through June.
Motorists on eastbound I-8 are detoured to exit at Bonds Corner Road to the westbound I-8 on-ramp, to northbound Orchard Road or southbound SR-7.
The traffic shift and ramp closures are needed to accommodate removing old pavement on the eastbound side as part of the I-8 Update Continuous Reinforced Concrete Pavement Project, Segment 1.
Motorists are urged to prepare for delays and allow extra travel time during construction. Please drive cautiously and be Work Zone Alert while traveling in the area.
The $417 million I-8 Update will reconstruct 48 miles of traffic lanes and shoulders. Work on the first ten-mile segment is in the vicinity of SR-7. The I-8 Update is a five-segment project that will extend the life of the pavement and provide motorists with a smoother ride. Crews will use steel reinforcing bars placed within the concrete along the entire length of the pavement for greater strength and durability. The I-8 Update project is scheduled to be completed by 2019.
