The City of San Diego invites you to learn about data being generated by our new streetlight sensors. The City is holding several community forums to discuss what the streetlights can and can’t do and how your privacy will be protected. We will also collect feedback from residents and businesses on how to improve the program.
The smart streetlight program is a pilot program through the City’s Sustainability Department. It initially began as a cost-saving effort for the City to replace high-energy streetlights with more efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
Sensors are installed on streetlights that can capture metadata (or processed, anonymized data) on pedestrian movement, vehicle movement, parked cars and other mobility information. The City is now building an application that will use the metadata to help improve city planning.
