The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego is currently producing the Tony Award winning play, VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE. It tells the story of three siblings who have a quirky relationship. Vanya and Sonia have lived at home, taking care of their parents’ estate while Masha has been traveling the world as a B-movie star. Masha returns home with her young lover Spike with intentions of selling the family estate. This farcical story is comedic and was well received by the audience.
Set design by David Korins was breathtaking. From the outward stone of the farm house to the inside chairs, furniture and small, specific detailed props, nothing was missing. There were many meaningful monologues delivered by the characters. Sonia spoke about her spinster life and watching the struggle on her face and hearing her voice inflection, was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. Vanya gave a great speech about old versus new things in life and how they affect us every day. It gave cause to stop and think about our current culture. Although there were deep moments, it wasn’t a heavy show. It was fun, uplifting and silly.
The show runs through June 22nd, for more information, please check out the Old Globe’s website:http://www.theoldglobe.org/tickets/production.aspx?PID=10610
