In an effort to minimize the amount of used oil and other related hazardous materials from being disposed of improperly, the City of San Diego, in partnership with the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) will conduct these recycling events throughout San Diego through January, 2016.

Home mechanics can bring used auto products, including used motor oil, oil filters, auto batteries, and antifreeze for disposal and recycling to any of the event locations. The first event will be held at Qualcomm Stadium on Saturday, October 17 with additional events in San Ysidro area, Bay Terraces area and Kearny Mesa.

The service is free to City residents (proof of residency required) and runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents are asked to bring the liquid waste in closed containers and secure the containers against breakage or spills. The maximum transportation limit is 10 gallons and commercial waste is not permitted. Due to weight restrictions, only three auto batteries per household are accepted.

If residents are unable to attend one of these events, they are encouraged to make an appointment at the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Transfer Facility located at the entrance to the Miramar Landfill and open 47 weekends a year.
