Globally inspired gastropub highlights a world of street cuisine plus local craft beers
Today is the grand opening of Red Card Café, a new gastropub in Bay Park, at 4140 Morena Boulevard, 92117, in the Bay Ho section of Clairemont. Offering a modern interior design, indoor-outdoor seating and a menu built around the rising popularity of international street foods, Red Card Café is the first restaurant by Paris-born proprietor Caroline Sternberg.
Making creative use of an industrial space that once served as a catering kitchen, Red Card Café will offer raised, air-duct accented ceilings and refinished white walls ornamented with oversized mirrors and historic, sienna-toned prints of early 20th century European football. Entering the main dining room, guests can opt for plush booths, café-style and high-top tables, and a concrete finished bar complemented by a fire engine red tap pouring fourteen local craft beers. A semi-private room at the front of the main dining room will offer a more intimate space for smaller gatherings and overflow seating, while through a rustic, sliding barn door guests will discover a large back room featuring a communal king’s table crafted from reclaimed barn wood. In sharp contrast to this, a side area of Red Card Café’s back dining room has been transformed into a casual lounge area complete with white sofas and black leather chairs under modern, starburst-esque chandeliers.
Executive Chef Drew Lopez, who hails from former roles at Brian Malarkey’s Green Acre,
Sausage and Meat and Lei Lounge, has created a menu anchored by more than a dozen international street foods including Argentine beef empanadas, Peruvian salchipapas, Polish potato pierogi, French Canadian duck poutine and Chinese char siu pork bao buns. Each Saturday and Sunday, a brunch menu delivers dishes like “Duck Legs and Eggs,” prosciutto-topped avocado toast, French crepes, lemon poppy pancakes, and other sweet and savory bites. Local craft beers and artisan wines will round out the experience.
Red Card Café will be open daily; walk-ins are welcome. The restaurant will serve lunch and dinner Monday through Friday, and brunch and dinner on Saturdays and Sundays.
