Interstate 5 at Genesee Closed Overnights August 6-12

PR:Caltrans is asking motorists to steer clear of Interstate 5 (I-5)/Genesee Avenue interchange as crews demolish and remove the old freeway overpass during the nights of August 6-12.

All southbound and northbound lanes of I-5 will be closed at Genesee Avenue from 9 p.m. Saturday, August 6 to 9 a.m. on Sunday, August 7. Southbound traffic will be detoured to Interstate 805. Northbound traffic will be detoured to eastbound Interstate 8 and eastbound State Route 52 freeways. There will also be reduced lanes on Genesee Avenue.

During the week of August 8 to 12 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., there will be intermittent one direction closures on I-5 at Genesee Avenue. Starting at 11:30 p.m., traffic will be detoured to Genesee Avenue off-ramp and re-enter I-5 using the on-ramp. There will also be reduced lanes on Genesee Avenue.

Motorists and people on bikes are encouraged to steer clear of this area if possible during this work. Pedestrian access is closed throughout construction. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained. Please note: construction schedules are subject to change.

Access real-time traffic info through any of these resources:  511SD, Caltrans QuickMap, WAZE, Google Maps, or Shift San Diego. View the closures and detours list as well as project information at KeepSanDiegoMoving.com/Genesee or get more info by calling the Project Hotline at (888) 720-9321.

The $105 million project will replace the existing six-lane Genesee Avenue overpass with a ten-lane structure that will include additional vehicle lanes, new bike lanes and sidewalks, and better accommodate current and future traffic demands in the San Diego region. The I-5/Genesee Avenue Interchange Project is expected to be completed in 2017.
