Fixit Clinics at San Diego Central Library

Have you ever wondered how your lamp, toaster, or laptop works? The City of San Diego has a new “hands on” way to find out. The San Diego Central Library @ Joan Irwin Jacobs Common and Environmental Services Department invites residents to participate in a series of Fixit Clinics to help you repair or rehab anything you own that needs some fixing up.

On Saturday, February 13, and running every second Saturday throughout the year, Fixit Clinics are designed to promote the City’s Zero Waste objectives through a series of creative, “DIY” Do-itYourself programs. “We are encouraging residents of all ages to ‘fix it’ versus ‘pitch it’ to save space in the City’s landfill,” said Laura Anthony, event organizer. Fixit Clinic partner, Goodwill Industries of San Diego County, will be on site to accept any donated items.

Here’s how the Fixit Clinic works:

1. Register to participate (see link below). Walk-ins are welcome if time/space is available;

2. Bring your broken, non-functioning item: electronics, appliances, computers, toys, bicycles, or clothes for an assessment, disassembly, and possible repair;

3. Organizers and volunteers will sign you in and provide workspace, specialty tools and guidance to help you disassemble and repair your item;

4. Whether they fix it or not, you’ll learn more about how your item was built and how it works.
